CLEAR and Us

In December 2020, We Are Mayreau, Inc (WAM) was approached by Dr Owen Day of the Centre for Livelihoods, Ecosystems, Energy, Adaptation and Resilience in the Caribbean Limited (CLEAR Caribbean) to participate in a coral restoration project. Dr. Day, who was conducting restoration work in Petit Saint Vincent and Saint Lucia, sought local partners to expand the program to the other islands of the Grenadines. After several meetings and information sessions with the WAM team, WAM’s leadership led by Marion Isaacs, decided to take on the challenge of starting a reef restoration program for the community of Mayreau. The CLEAR Caribbean/WAM project “Community-based coral restoration and livelihood diversification in St. Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines” 2021-2023 was supported by funding from the Inter-American Foundation and co-financed by the Caribbean Biodiversity Fund. Other partners include the Philip Stephenson Foundation, TradeWinds Ltd. and the Tobago Cays Marine Park (TCMP). The project is led by local community members who are passionate about marine conservation, leaving a legacy of environmental stewardship and contributing to a safe, healthy island. The contract was signed in July 2021, and as the program grew and a clearer sense of community ownership emerged, Reef Life Inc. was created in January of 2023.

TCMP and Us

As the only inhabited Island in the Tobago Cays Marine Park, Mayreau has a unique set of challenges. In an effort to improve livelihood opportunities for the community and to explore ways in which marine conservation, restoration and protection can provide avenues to support entrepreneurship, and economic activities we are nurturing our relationship with the management of the TCMP. We are striving towards a more equitable and sustainable relationship.

TradeWinds and Us

Keeping the dream alive! TradeWinds Ltd, has joined the reef restoration family. This international cruise company operates a base on Mayreau and has generously donated a compressor, a 40ft shipping container (that is being retrofitted for office, storage and compressor) and a floating platform to our program. Turquoise Dream (TD)- the very first Catamaran owned by the company, has been overhauled and refurbished as a floating platform. TD will be beautifully situated in the Tobago Cays as a major attraction to our tours.
