The Mayreau Coral Reef Restoration Project, also known as Reef Life Inc, is a green enterprise focused on marine restoration in the Southern Grenadines. Committed to environmental stewardship, Reef Life engages the community through educational programs and activities. We know that simple, everyday actions can have a big impact, and we are committed to doing so through our ridge-to-reef approach to marine restoration, conservation, and protection. We are HEROs (Helpful Earthlings Restoring Oceans). Reef Life’s team of coral gardeners, ecological farmers and environmental advocates hope that through our ongoing efforts, we can inspire more persons to become HEROs.
Increased ocean temperatures and changing ocean chemistry are the greatest global threats to coral reef ecosystems. These threats are caused by warmer atmospheric temperatures and increasing levels of carbon dioxide in seawater (US EPA 2023). Within the Caribbean region, as much as 80% of reefs have been lost to disease and natural disasters. Small island communities such as our own, whose survival are inherently entrenched and dependent on our marine environment, must focus on the ways in which waste mismanagement, overfishing and harmful agricultural practices significantly contribute to our dying reef ecosystems. To address the critical and potential catastrophic collapse of our marine environment, we need to educate, create awareness and take immediate action.
There is a need for proactive and progressive local strategies to manage reef ecosystems. Coral reef restoration allows individual communities a tried and tested way to start taking immediate action to save our oceans. Reef restoration is not a new concept, it started in the 1960s with artificial reefs when coral degradation become more noticeable. However, the construction of nurseries and out planting were introduced in the early 2000s. As a community living in a marine protected areas, we have first hand experience of the consequences of lost reef ecosystems. By championing this cause and being proactive we can save and protect our home.
